This year we are offering one week sessions for children ages 6 to 8 . The program can accommodate 8 boys and 8 girls. Our preliminary trial was in 2010 and last year was very successful with an extra session offered near the end of the summer! We are excited to welcome our new Wilvaken Explorers for 2012.
Our Explorer weeks for 2012 start on Sundays: July 1st, July 8th and July 29th. There is also the possibility for enthusiastic Explorers to extend their stay for a second week. (see Dates and Rates).
Designed for young boys and girls, Wilvaken Explorer is an intimate and engaging program for first-time campers. Children live in a cabin with others of the same age, and participate in traditional camp activities under the guidance of experienced Wilvaken counsellors. Campers live in the same cabin as their counsellor, so they develop meaningful relationships with an adult mentor at camp. We maintain a 1:4 staff-to-camper ratio during the Wilvaken Explorer program.
It will be a fun experience for all - a new experience and introductory session for campers who are younger and wish to come to try summer camp, and a great way to build up self-esteem, self-confidence and independence.
The nature of Wilvaken Explorer allows counsellors to monitor the development of each individual camper, and provide the support necessary to help them succeed in the Camp environment. We recognize that each child adjusts to his or her first camp experience in different ways. Our objective is to ensure that campers have a positive camp experience, preparing them for a lifelong love of nature, outdoor activity, and community.
The Wilvaken Explorer program is designed around a unique theme, and features all of the traditional camp activities that make the Wilvaken experience stand out. Campers take part in cabin-based activities, which serve as an introduction to many camp program areas (canoeing, arts & crafts, archery, tennis, outdoor adventure). The schedule is rounded out by other favourite programs. An overnight adventure on our island may be included.
Campers are introduced to Wilvaken's most popular program areas, and are taught program skills by their counsellors and program instructors.
Activities not included in this session are water-skiing and riding. Swimming activity with some instruction will be done daily. We will offer a pony ride during the week.
